Tom, just a quick thought on your current episode. Current activity on the Sun is generating large solar flares which have the potential to impact our current technologies in an adverse manner.

Would be interesting to see how solution architects would reverse engineer current shiny toys back to a manual version if these solar flares reduce our technological capabilities to a large paper weight.

Yeah, a global-scale Carrington Effect would be, uh, fun... (I actually used that concept as part of the trigger for global change in my 'Yabbies' novel I wrote back around 25 years ago.)

And yeah, that's exactly why I've been pushing enterprise-architects and IT-oriented solution-architects to think seriously about this kind of issue for, oh, at least a couple of decades now. To no avail, of course: in most cases the best response I get is a kind of blank 'Huh?' - it's just way outside of their ability to comprehend. Oh well. But at least there _are_ still groups like that Lost Trades Festival that are maintaining at least _some_ of the skills that would be needed if/when all the electronics goes pffft.

The tricky bit is going to be vehicles, because everything after about 2000 or so will be completely dependent on electronics to work at all. And, uh, it'd take a _long_ time to breed up enough horses to take over when the vehicles are all gone... :-o
